Game developers want government body formed to license games of skill and chance

Published on:

With the Madras High Court struck down the law banning online games involving stakes, online game developers are demanding the government constitute a regulatory body to scrutinize and democratize the online gaming milieu instead of opting for outright bans.

The online rummy industry has an annual turnover of Rs 4,000 crore according to the Online Rummy Federation. While some users hold some suspicious views of these gaming apps owing to their non-availability on the Play Store and iOS, game developers are of the opinion that we are living in the “new-age entertainment” that is classified as a “game of chance and game of skills”.

The chorus to ban online games involving cash has compelled the game developers to speed up their efforts in putting together a request to state governments to draft a law for such online games.

Deepak Gullapalli, founder and CEO of Head Digital Works, believes that betting and gambling are unconstitutional and so is banning these games, and wants a law to democratize the game.

“We also witnessed a rise in the number of people playing games of skill in the last one year,” he told The New Indian Express

“Online rummy continues to be the biggest source of entertainment which is here to stay. We demand to formulate a government body that licenses the games of chance and skills. Most of these games have the financial backing of top venture capitalists of India.” argues Sameer Barde, CEO of The Online Rummy Federation.

He also believes that the government must form a regulatory body to regulate the online gaming sector.

Shivang Ahuja, a lead technical artist in the gaming industry, opines that the online poker industry is witnessing a boom with professional players earning a lot of money via the medium.

“Banning such games would not be a good idea because players are growing their gaming skills and becoming financially strong. Games of skills and chance is actually accelerating the gaming industry,” says Ahuja.
