Uttar Pradesh: Medical student steals jewelry to recover money lost in online gambling

After squandering INR 15 Lakh intended for his tuition expenses in online gambling, a 22-year-old student pursuing an MBBS degree from Russia was detained along with a friend for reportedly stealing jewelry worth lakhs of Rupees from a neighbor’s home in Muzaffarnagar.

Rohan Kumar, a resident of Mimlana neighborhood, returned home from Russia a month ago after finishing the first year of his medical education, according to SP (city) Arpit Vijayvargiya. He lost Rs 15 lakh that his family had given him for tuition and living expenses due to his online gambling addiction.

Vijayvargiya, in a statement, said, “To recover the money, Rohan along with Amit Kumar, a second-year D-Pharm student, hatched a plan to rob his next door neighbor’s house. On February 10, the duo entered the house from the terrace at night when the owner, Laxmi Rani, who works as a teacher, was out and decamped with gold and silver jewelry,” according to Times of India.

According to the report, The following day, the victim went to the police station in Nagar Kotwali and made a report. The two suspects were recognized by authorities after reviewing the local CCTV footage.

Rohan attempted to flee the police raid on his house on Sunday and swallowed a stolen gold necklace during that time. However, he was arrested and sent to the hospital, where the X-ray scan revealed that he had jewelry in his stomach. Other stolen jewelry were also recovered from his house upon further search.

In the context of the same, the SHO (Muzaffarnagar) Mahaveer Chauhan made a statement, “Rohan is currently lodged in jail. We will wait for him to naturally expel the chain, otherwise we’ll take him to the hospital for a surgery to extricate the same.”
