Online gaming startups are set to present details regarding setting up at least two self-regulatory organizations (SRO) by Sunday, June 11. The final news regarding the same will be disclosed to MeitY (Ministry of Electronics and Information Technology) by the said date.
Of the two SROs assumed, one is being suggested by members of the All India Gaming Federation (AIGF) while the second is reportedly going to be established by the members of e-gaming federation (EGF) and the Federation of Indian Fantasy Sports (FIFS) in a joint association.
The AIGF has already released a draft model charter for online gaming self-regulatory bodies (SRBs) containing all the important steps to be taken while forming the bodies and discuss the draft with stakeholders. FIFS also revealed previously that they are working with industrial partners to constitute an SRB.
According to the source, the SRB, being established by EGF and FIFS, has asked retired Justice AK Sikri; a retired scientist from the IT ministry, Rakesh Maheshwari, a former national cybersecurity coordinator; Gulshan Rai; and a former chief information commissioner, Bimal Julka, to join as the Board of Directors.
“These people have been approached to be a part of the board of directors of the SRB. In total, we have proposed having 8 people on the board,” the source said according to Economic Times.
SROs to be approved in a couple of weeks
The approval for the SROs is likely to come in the next couple of weeks after it is presented to MeitY on Tuesday. According to an individual with knowledge of the matter, the SRB of the EGF and FIFS has suggested creating a “testing framework” to categorize games of skill and chance in an objective way.
The games that apply for certification will have seven tests to determine if they are games of skill or games of chance. To get a provisional certification to operate in India the games will have to pass six tests after which they will be provided three months to pass the seventh test according to the second source.
