Refrain from playing online ludo, chess, cards during office hours: Sikkim Transport Dept

The transport department of Sikkim on 6 May instructed its employees to refrain from playing online ludo, chess, and cards during office hours. The department circular signed by secretary PN Sherpa points out that such activities during office hours impact the office decorum and smooth functioning of the office. Sikkim is one of three states in the northeast that have regulated online gambling and gaming.

In a similar instance, the Palghar police recently issued a circular directing that no police officer should play or have online rummy or gambling apps on their phones. Palghar SP Dattatray Shinde said playing such games would impact the image of the police. The police boss had directed senior officials to check the mobiles of their juniors and uninstall apps related to rummy, poker, and gambling apps. Senior police official mobiles would be checked by the sub-divisional authorities.’

The state of Meghalaya has recently enacted the Meghalaya Regulation of Gaming Act, 2021 whereby it now permits operators to obtain a licence to offer online and land-based games of chance such as slots, roulette, keno, wheel of fortune, etc. within the state. The law was notified in December 2021 and is similar to the law already in force in Sikkim. The government had earlier announced that the law is only for tourists coming to the state.
