Courtside Ventures announces $100 million Fund III to back online gaming startups

Early-stage venture capital firm Courtside Ventures has launched its $100 million Fund III, which will invest in businesses throughout the world in the lifestyle, gaming and sports industries.

Courtside Ventures has invested in a number of Indian businesses since its founding in 2016, including WinZo, FanCraze, Zionverse, and Fello. Investors in Fund III include a wide range of professional sports team owners, athletes, and business executives.

Some of them include Dan Gilbert (Founder & Chairman of Rocket Mortgage and Chairman of Cleveland Cavaliers), David Blitzer (Co-Owner of Philadelphia 76ers, NJ Devils, Cleveland Guardians and Crystal Palace), Dee and Jimmy Haslam (CEO, Chairman and Managing Partners at Haslam Sports Group), Whitney Haslam Johnson and JW Johnson (Partners at Haslam Sports Group), among others.

The vast majority of Fund III investors have previously invested in other Courtside funds, according to The Hindu Businessline. With this latest announcement, Courtside Ventures has pledged more than $200 million AUM (assets under management).

“Courtside Ventures has a track record of successfully backing and accelerating culture-shaping companies that are driving innovation, and with Fund III we will continue to invest with conviction in great founders and disruptive ideas in our key verticals of sports, fitness, collectibles and gaming,” said Deepen Parikh, a partner at Courtside Ventures.

“We will also continue to put a strong emphasis on global investment opportunities, as our vertical focus and learnings from the US market are applicable to larger and higher growth regions. We remain heavily committed to our portfolio companies, all of which are well positioned to maintain resilience in a market where calculated execution is key,” he added.

Over 80 enterprises in eight different countries have received investments from Courtside. Fund I is reportedly placed in the top 10% of all venture funds in its vintage with a return of 1.61X in net DPI proceeds of LP. Some of the most notable investments include WinZO, Beam (acquired by Microsoft), 100Thieves, FanCraze and others.

Courtside Ventures has already started using Fund III, working with early-stage entrepreneurs who have ideas for the future of sports, gaming, and lifestyle applications all over the world. Matchday, Mojo, Jackpot.com, Venly, Bezel, Fliff and Fello are some of the Fund III investments so far.
