It is now a well established fact that online gaming has grown exponentially through the Covid 19 pandemic-led lockdown. This phenomenal growth has been largely led by fringe players that dipped their toes into gaming either out of curiosity or boredom. During this period, online gaming went on to become a hot topic of discussion in India with many social media platforms bursting with posts, stories videos and so on. According to Twitter blog post, between esports leagues like the Call of Duty League and VALORANT Champions Tour, along with global gaming events like E3 and Summer Game Fest, there has been a rise of 18 per cent in tweets about gaming YoY.
Gamers from all around the world stop by Twitter to discuss new game announcements, patch notes, highlights from major esports events, bets on risky tattoos and so on. India has risen up to the seventh position when it comes to tweeting about gaming, behind United Kingdom, France, Spain. Japan is at the top position followed by United States, Korea, Brazil, Thailand, Philippines.
As of January 2021 India was at the eighth position, but halfway through Q2, the country has made a leap to seventh position. Many experts believe, India is bound to further improve its ranking by the end of the year.
