Social gaming platform WinZO and unicorn Mobile Premier League (MPL) have amicably settled the dispute over the claims of copyright and trademark infringement of WinZO ‘World War’ by MPL. Accordingly, the suit filed by WinZO was disposed of by the Delhi HC on 11 July.

In a hearing on 4 July, the counsels representing MPL and WinZO informed the Court that they have entered into an amicable settlement and a joint application containing the terms of such settlement is proposed to be filed in the next hearing.

The matter again came up for hearing on 11 July when the terms of settlement whereof as contained in the emails dated 03 July exchanged between the parties have been filed with the Court. Considering the emails, the High Court disposed of the suit filed by WinZO.

As per reports, WinZO launched ‘World War’ in April 2020 and the game currently has nearly 80 Mn registered users. It has also applied for a patent for the invention, copyright registration about the expression of the format, and trademark for ‘World War’.

The conflict started in March this year when WinZO discovered that MPL had allegedly copied the format and the name. After MPL was informed about the issue, it took down the format from its platform, the statement said. However, in a complete volte-face, MPL re-commenced using the entire identical format with each of the distinctive features in use by WinZO, by 2nd April.

This year, WinZO in different cases sued Moonshine Technologies (Baazi Games), Google, and MPL before the HC. In 2021, WinZO filed a case against Head Digital (A23) which was followed by a similar case by A23. Baazi Games filed a case against WinZO in 2021 for trademark injunction. The Baazi cases were amicably resolved and both the cases were disposed of.
