Anil Jaisinghani, a suspected bookie, has been arrested by the Enforcement Directorate (ED) in connection with an ongoing investigation into a betting racket raking illegal bets during the ongoing Indian Premier League (IPL) matches, according to authorities.
Jaisinghani’s daughter Aniksha was also recently arrested for allegedly targeting Maharashtra Deputy Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis’s wife Amruta Fadnavis. According to reports from Deccan Herald, Aniksha and Jaisinghani tried to bribe Amruta.
The duo then went on to blackmail the deputy CM’s wife using her private texts in order to extort money from her after she refused to help them in dropping multiple FIRs against Jaisinghani.
According to reports, Aniksha planned to befriend Amruta and then asked her to help her father against the various criminal proceedings pending against him. Aniksha even tried to offer Rs 1 crore as bribe to Amruta.
On February 20, the Malabar Hill Police Station in south Mumbai filed an FIR against Anil Jaisinghani and Aniksha on the basis of claimed threats to release specific audio and videotapes allegedly depicting Amruta Fadnavis taking favors from Aniksha.
After presenting a Mumbai court with a production warrant and requesting his detention in accordance with the Prevention of Money Laundering Act (PMLA), the ED’s Ahmedabad office took custody of Jaisinghani on Friday.
The federal agency was looking into a money laundering case from 2015 involving suspected betting on IPL matches, and the ED was operating on an active non-bailable warrant issued against Jaisinghani by an Ahmedabad court at the time.
Jaisinghani is currently under investigation while ED looks further into the matter. It is told that the Madhya Pradesh Police previously detained Jaisinghani in connection with an alleged bootlegging case.
The court granted bail to Aniksha, who was detained on March 17, March 27, while her father, Anil Jaisinghani, was detained by the Mumbai Police after being apprehended in Gujarat, and is now being held in judicial custody after having his bail request denied.
