Goa cops raid enterprises thriving illegal gambling activity despite curfew

Goa crime branch has raided a gambling den at Majorda and arrested one person under Goa Public Gambling Act. The state is currently at the curfew stage where apart from essential services everything is non-operational but despite that the enterprise was illegally thriving.

As per the sources the crime branch sleuths conducted the raid  at 3 p.m on a gambling den and arrested one accused under section 11 (2) of Goa Public Gambling Act. The accused person was accepting bets on numbers as a game of chance.

During the raid a cash of Rs 22,100 was seized from the arrested person who has been identified as Maruti Bhagvan Govekar (40) residing at Aquem, Margao.

Earlier on Friday 11 persons were arrested following the operations from Gandhi market Majorda  involved in the unlawful activities.Rs 80,000 in cash, 11 “all in one” computers, each worth Rs 25,000 and an internet modem, a router, two wi-fi dongles, all worth nearly Rs 35,000 were seized by the police.

“It goes to the credit of SP Singh that he cracked down on the gambling den. The police brass should now take similar action on other such gambling dens in operation in Margao  without yielding to any political pressure,” a trader from Gandhi market said.
