The Tamil Nadu state cabinet chaired by CM Stalin is set to meet on June 27. It will be only the second cabinet meeting this year after the March 5th meeting which was convened to discuss the State Budget.

According to reports in the local media, the action to be taken on online rummy will be deliberated by the cabinet. The Committee formed to recommend a strong law for banning online rummy headed by retired Justice K Chandru is expected to submit its report by June 25. The Committee which was announced on June 10 is mandated to submit the report within 2 weeks.

The members of the committee include a technical expert from the Indian Institute of Technology-Madras (IIT-M), Sankararaman, Lakshmi Vijayakumar, psychiatrist and founder of Sneha, an NGO involved in prevention of suicide, and ADGP Vinit Dev Wankhede.

The decision to form the panel was taken following a spate of suicides across the State by victims who lost money to online gambling.

The earlier banning law enacted by AIADMK government was struck down by the Madras High Court last year. “The Government moved an appeal against the High Court order on November 13, 2021 before the Supreme Court which is yet to be heard. Moreover, similar laws drafted in Kerala and Karnataka have also been struck down by High Courts,” Stalin said on June 10 while constituting the Justice Chandru committee. The Stalin led government moved an appeal against the Madras High Court decision.
