Hyderabad: Last night, the Twitter handle of Telangana Congress tweeted a four-word tweet calling the ruling party as Telangana Rummy Samiti. Known as TRS, the party headed by KCR is in power in the state since 2014. The state enacted a strict anti-gambling law in 2017 becoming the first state to ban online gaming for stakes.

Monday’s accusation by Congress comes on the unconfirmed reports that Ibrahimpatnam MLA, Manchireddy Kishan Reddy was caught red-handed playing rummy in an MLC office in Madhapur. Congress sources accuse the ruling party of shielding the MLA and booking the case for paltry INR 1 lakh while the actual amount caught is around INR 1.5 crores.

This is not the first time, a ruling party legislator in Telangana is accused of playing rummy in violation of a law enacted by the government. On November 5 last year, a huge contingent of the Hyderabad Task Force and the Begumpet police raided a Diwali after-party and arrested a businessman, Aravind Agarwal, 55, and booked him for organising a gambling party for several VIPs. Those apprehended on Diwali night include four MLAs of the ruling TRS party.

In October, the Cyberabad police had raided a farmhouse on Hyderabad outskirts belonging to a Tollywood hero and booked 30 people including politicians for gambling in a casino style.
Over the past couple of months, rummy apps with shady business structuring have started targeting people in the Telugu States with YouTube and social media ads. Apps with the names Dash Rummy (Spherisol Technology Private Limited), Rum Rummy (Frittle Play Fantasy Games Private Limited), and Rose Rummy (Frittle Play Fantasy Games Private Limited) have flooded social media with ads promising high returns. These companies are primarily based in Mumbai or Delhi. Congress-leaning regional media reported that rummy operators have entered into a deal with a ruling party leader to ensure no action is taken by law enforcement.
