Dota 2 developers ditch battle pass owing to diminished sales

Published on:

Popular multiplayer online battle arena (MOBA) game Dota 2 is getting rid of its seasonal battle pass. The announcement was done through an official blog post on the ten-year anniversary of Dota’s public release.

According to the announcement, most of the Dota 2 player never buy the battle pass and thus, the developers saw diminishing sales over the years. The post discussed the past of Dota 2 along with sharing information on what will come next for the game in the future.

The Battle pass initially started as a way for the people who could attend “The International” (TI) called The International Interactive Compendium, which went on to become the Battle Pass with a wide variety of content and rewards.

As the time went on, the company said that they started bundling several things in the battle pass, which took a lot of time and led to a lot of content drop every year but also limited the developers’ ability to design other things.

The New Frontiers update changed a lot of things according to the company and was very well received. The update was the experimental update separate from the battle pass. Another reason to ditch the battle pass that the company revealed was that not many players bought it and played the additional content for rewards.

Valve to shift focus with diverse updates

With this, Valve stated that while they will be focusing on shipping a range of cosmetics over the year, they will also add more diverse updates adding a wide variety of features and content for the game in different ways.

The developers are already working on another update that is set to release in September. The update will have content related to TI and contribute towards its prize pool, but players will not have new cosmetic to grind for.

“By freeing Dota’s update and content cycle from the timing and structural constraints of the Battle Pass, we can go back to making content in the way we know best: by coming up with fun ideas of all scales and shapes, and exploring them with you,” Valve stated.
