Game streaming viewership falls in April-June 2022, Facebook Gaming worst hit

The number of hours streamed and watched across majors game streaming platforms have seen a downward trend over the last year, according to the latest Streamlabs and Stream Hatchet report on the landscape of livestreaming. The slowdown could be a case of outdoor events opening up amid easing of Covid19 restrictions.

Hours watched across all platforms decreased by 8.4% compared to the previous quarter (Jan-March 2022 : April-June 2022). Hours streamed across all platforms decreased by 12% compared to the previous quarter. Viewers watched 7.36 billion hours of content across all platforms, down from 8.06 billion hours in the previous quarter.

Between April and June, streamers on the three platforms were live for 273 million hours. That’s down 19.4 percent from Q2 2021 and 12 percent from the previous quarter.

Viewers tuned in to streams for 7.36 billion hours across the three platforms last quarter. That’s a drop of 18.1 percent year over year (viewership was at 8.99 billion hours in Q2 2021) and 8.4 percent from the previous quarter. 76.7% of total watch hours are on Twitch. Viewers watched 5.64 billion hours of live streams on Twitch in Q2, down from 6.13 billion hours in the previous quarter.

Hours watched on Facebook Gaming in Q2 decreased 28% compared to the previous quarter.

Viewers watched 580 million hours of live streams on Facebook Gaming in Q2, down from 803 million hours in the previous quarter. Unique channels streaming on Facebook Gaming in Q2 decreased 15.5% compared to the previous quarter.

An average of 265 thousand concurrent viewers watched Facebook Gaming in Q2, down from 372 thousand in the previous quarter. Year-over-year, average concurrent viewership decreased 51.1% from 542 thousand concurrent viewers in Q2 2021.

Riot Games stood as top publisher with 897 million watch hours. Twitch’s Just Chatting category grew at 2% giving the category its highest ever viewership (828 million). The most-watched categories after that were Grand Theft Auto V (465 million hours) and League of Legends (464 million).
