An Armed Reserve Head Constable serving in the Anantapur circle faced suspension by Superintendent of Police K.K.N. Anburajan following his arrest in connection with gambling activities. The suspension came after he was apprehended alongside sixteen others during a crackdown on gambling operations on the outskirts of Bukkarayasamudram in the district, as confirmed on Wednesday.
The Hindu reported that the police acted on a tip-off, the Bukkarayasamudram police, accompanied by a special party from Anantapur, conducted a raid at the location, resulting in the arrest of 17 individuals. Charges were filed against them under the A.P. Gaming Act. Among the detainees was an AR head constable, leading to immediate suspension orders issued against him, according to the SP.
During the operation, police authorities seized a total of ₹31,000 in cash and confiscated 11 mobile phones from the accused individuals.
Emphasising the significance of the ongoing crackdown, Superintendent K.K.N. Anburajan spoke about the police’s proactive measures, especially with the upcoming general elections. Cordon and search operations began across Anantapur district from late Tuesday night till the early hours of Wednesday. These operations included thorough searches of fields, farmhouses, and haystacks, commonly utilized as hiding spots for illicit materials such as smuggled liquor from neighbouring Karnataka, ID liquor, gutkha, and other contraband substances.
Furthermore, the police took additional steps to ensure public safety and security during the election period. Notably, all known rowdy-sheeters and former convicts with significant criminal backgrounds were summoned and counselled to refrain from engaging in illegal activities throughout the electoral process. Superintendent Anburajan reiterated the commitment of law enforcement authorities to maintain law and order and uphold the integrity of the electoral process.
The swift action taken against the involvement of a law enforcement officer in unlawful activities underscores the stringent enforcement of laws and regulations by the Anantapur police department.
