‘Why doesn’t the Centre ban Mahadev Book app?’ – Chhattisgarh CM Bhupesh Baghel hits back at opposition

Chhattisgarh Chief Minister Bhupesh Baghel has responded to the opposition’s criticism of his government in relation to the Mahadev Book illegal betting app scam which is being investigated by the Enforcement Directorate (ED) in the state.

Addressing the media, Baghel said that the ED officials have been torturing and beating his officials in order to get their confessions out of fear. The CM claimed that despite there being no evidence to build a case, various central agencies have been investigating the matter which was also brought to the courts. He further said that if that is so, let the Interpol also investigate.

Baghel also claimed that it is his state only which has taken action against Mahadev Book app which has resulted in arrests of hundreds of individuals and seizure of equipment such as mobile phones and tablets that were used to take the bets.

The Chhattisgarh CM further said that they have also issued lookout circulars against the alleged culprits. Asking the central government as to what they have been doing about the matter, Baghel said that it is their duty to nab the alleged culprits and put a stop to Mahadev Book illegal betting app.

Seeking answers, Baghel asked if the central government wants to ban betting and gambling and claims that the Chhattisgarh state government is also involved in running betting operations, why are they then imposing 28% GST on other gambling activities?

He further asked why Mahadev Book app has not been banned yet despite his government taking action after which even the ED got involved. He clarified that the Centre has the authority to ban the apps, not his government.

The political debate has been sparked after ED conducted searches in the Mahadev Book betting app case recently and booked several individuals including Baghel’s political advisor Vinod Verma and an ASI named Chandrabhushan Verma.
