The Aurangabad police recently turned to the Indian Computer Emergency Response Team (CERT-IN) and requested it to block the websites that are facilitating dubious platforms for betting on various kinds of sports including Cricket. 

For the unversed, CERT-IN is the nodal agency that deals with cybersecurity threats and works under the Union ministry of electronics and information technology. In addition to that, its role includes being the national incident response center for major computer incidents in India. 

Osmanpur Police Station’s inspector Geeta Bagwade informed TOI that her team had recently arrested 4 people who were placing bets on IPL matches using their smartphones on the roadside.

Upon investigation, the police force found that there are certain mobile-based applications on which one has to register himself/herself after which individuals are hired as bookies or agents in different cities. The gambler is required to transfer the betting amount through an e-wallet to these bookies or agents, against which they are given online coins to place bets on matches.
 
Prescribing harsher punishments to the gamblers, the cyber police have earlier expressed that in order to combat the problem of illegal gambling activities, the suspects caught for placing or accepting online bets should be struck with non-bailable sections of the Information Technology Act.
