Ludhiana: Eight people arrested for illegal gambling as police ramp up raids in city

The district police in Ludhiana raided a house in Salem Tabri on Saturday and arrested eight people involved in illegal gambling. A total of Rs 6.03 lakh was seized from the arrested individuals in the raid.

The eight people arrested are identified as Darshan Singh (38) of Chawni Mohalla, Sahil Makkar (32) of Shimlapuri, Avtar Singh (55) of Chawni Mohalla, Rahul Kumar (30) of Sunet, Pardeep Arora (44) of Haibowal, Tajinder Singh (32) of Chandni Chowk, Rahul Kumar (45) of Manjit Nagar and Shiv Kumar (29) of Dhai Marla Colony.

Speaking to the media on Sunday, Commissioner of Police (CP) Kaustubh Sharma and ADCP (Crime) Rupinder Kaur Sran stated that a police squad had received a tip-off about a group of people gambling somewhere in Salem Tabri.

As a result, the team carried out a raid and apprehended eight people. The cops collected playing cards and other items from the scene in addition to Rs 6.03 lakh. Cases against every one of them have been registered under the Gambling Act.

According to Sran out of all eight caught only Tajinder Singh had a criminal history as cases of murder were filed against him in 2016 and 2019 and he was out on bail in both cases. This information came to light during the preliminary investigation, which revealed that seven of the eight suspects had no criminal histories.

According to the ADCP, police have lately begun conducting raids on gambling activities in the city, and some individuals have already been detained. She indicated that raids would continue in the days to come.

To curb these illegal gambling, a campaign has also started in Rajasthan under the direction of District Superintendent of Police (DST) Dharmendra Singh. Regular raids have been taking place at illegal gambling dens in order to strike fear among gamblers.
