Search operation against illegal gambling ahead of Durga Puja, five arrested

Durga Puja is just around the corner, and Assam police have started hunting illegal gamblers in the region. “Ahead of Durga Puja festival, police have been launching operations against gambling and last night arrested five persons,” Siba Prasad Kalita, an officer, said in his official statement.

A case had been registered at Gossaigaon police station about some illegal gambling activity going on in Palashguri village, where the police caught five people indulging themselves in illegal gambling. The police recovered about 15000 INR from the people participating in the activity.

The five people caught are identified as Hafizur Rahman, Afsar Ali, Sahajahan Miya, Abu Telep Sheik, and Insan Ali. “A police team of Sapkota OutPost near Gossaigaon in Kokrajhar district on Thursday night launched an operation in Palashguri village and caught five persons while gambling inside a house after a case was registered at Gossaigaon police station,” sources said.

The police are in search of more illegal gambling cases like the same and want to put an end to these issues as soon as possible, and what better time to start before a widely celebrated festival when everyone is in the mood to earn some extra money through illegal activities.

Durga Puja is one the most prominent festivals celebrated by the whole country and especially in the Indian states of West Bengal, Bihar, Assam, Odisha and Tripura, but there are several cases of people getting involved in illegal gambling for fun during these festivals. “Many gambling activities are happening in the districts during Durga Puja. Following this, an operation was launched ahead of Durga Puja to curb the illegal activities and nab the offenders”, police sources said.
